The Toy Tractor Times Celebrates Anniversary 2004
With the International 1086
"Your Old Friend Has a New Look"
On September 26, 1976 the International 1086 was introduced as part of the new
Pro-Ag line, to IH ag dealers at the International Harvester World Headquarters
in Chicago, Illinois. The heritage of over 5 Million Farmall tractors continued
in the new 86 series Pro-Ag line. This was a totally new look in farming: A new
tractor series built with the operator’s comfort in mind and built for the
professional agri-businessman.
The IH 1086 was the mid-range model in the 86 series and rated 131 pto horse
power at the Nebraska Tractor Test. Its picture graced silver Bulova watches
given to IH dealers at the September 1976 dealer introduction meeting. Over the
1086's seven year production run, it became the Farmall M of 1970s with 47,420
tractors sold. IH sold 26,000 more 1086's than the next best selling 86 series
tractor. The 1086 sold well because it could be the king pin on a dairy farm, a
planter tractor on big grain farm and handle every chore in between.
